Grow your own

The demand for allotments is on the rise and in some cities waiting lists even exceed 5 years; gardening and growing your own' is back in fashion and rightly so.

With the exercise involved and the nutritious food it yields, gardening can play a key role in a healthy heart lifestyle, as well as being therapeutic and personally satisfying.

Fit them in...

If you don't have an allotment or garden space is limited, there are plenty of ways to veggify' your garden; for example growing vegetables among flowers, including fruit bushes in a mixed hedge and growing potatoes in buckets. The Royal Horticultural Society (www.rhs.org.uk/vegetables) has plenty of handy tips for beginners and experts.

Muscle in...

Trekking backwards and forwards with a watering can will burn more calories than standing with a hosepipe and will save on water. Time spent with your veggies and ripping out the weeds can be a great way to unwind and keep those stress levels in check.

Gardening and growing your own fruit and vegetables is definitely worth including in a healthy heart lifestyle, you'll taste and feel the difference.
