Fire crews tackle grass fire
FIREFIGHERS battled for five hours yesterday to put out a grass fire in the Duddon Valley that they feared had spread to the underlying peat layer.
A crew from Broughton-in-Furness was first on the scene of the fire at Duddon Hall Woods at 6.14pm where around 150 square metres of grass was alight.
The firemen quickly called for back up from Millom after becoming initially concerned the blaze had spread deep into the peat layer below, creating the potential for a much longer-term fire.
The crews successfully tackled the blaze using spades and beaters. Two portable pumps were used to pump water up the hill to the location of the outbreak as fire engines were unable to get close.
The last appliance was not able to leave the scene until almost 11pm. The cause of the fire is not known.
