A TIGHTLY contested final for the Westmorland Gazette Open Pairs on Sunday ended in a thrilling win - a bowls version of the Turkey comeback to beat the Czech Republic in Euro 2008!
Victory went to Ted Thomas (Bowness BC) and Ed Hodgson (Victoria BC), who edged out Chris Wyatt and Peter Dobson (Windermere) 21-20.
Thomas and Hodgson took an early 13-4 lead, but Wyatt and Dobson fought back tenaciously to level at 15 across, and they threatened to run away with the title as they scored six points to lead 20-15.
But the eventual winners remained unflustered and they pulled back with two singles & two twos to snatch a 21-20 triumph.
The losing semi-finals were Graham Liver & partner (Morecambe) 21-15 (to the tournament winners) and Norman Sharpe & Martin Kinley (Victoria) 21-12.
